Artist Guenter Burr on the shores of Minas Basin, Nova Scotia, Canada

What drives me as an artist - my inspiration - First of all the thoughts & guidelines I received from my Master, Dieter Lukas-Larsen.  He made me aware how beautiful nature is.  To express this beauty (in landscapes, flowers, animals), is the most important power driving me to paint.

(On the shore's of the Minas Basin, Nova Scotia, "my favourite source of inspiration!")

Dieter taught me to "Look behind things, try to express the non-visible" and this is the other ideal which powers me.

Since I live here in Nova Scotia it is the mighty power of the enormous tides coming in and going out every day which I mean to express.  In 2007 I plan a series of 12 paintings with this particular theme.  I'm really excited to start this project and very very curious what will be the results.

I want, and have to try, to paint the invisible. In this case the mighty energy of the sea, the power of its tides and its influence on humans.  I will be using all the styles and techniques I know to see what works best for me.

Always, I remember Dieter's teachings: "never forget the rules of harmony" and "you are a painter, your most important tool is the colours, so use them."  These sentences I will never forget.  I hear the voice of Dieter behind or beside me telling me again and again these rules.  I still want to meet his expectations in me, and this is a great part of what drives me.

Today, I live in Moose Brook, close to Burncoat Head Park & lighthouse on the Noel Shore of Nova Scotia, Canada.  Since 2004 I have had the opportunity to display my paintings in the Lighthouse's Gallery.  I have developed an intense relationship and interest in the whole area, the ever changing moods and in particular the tides.  Because Burncoat Head Park is the official measuring location of the world's highest recorded tides, a large number of tourists visit this attraction every day in summer and fall.  They have the opportunity to view a video on the phenomenon of the tides and their incredible power.  Within a few minutes the tourists are very impressed.  I live here and am lucky to experience the influence of this enormous volume of moving water every day, and feel the challenge of interpreting this mighty power and energy in paintings.

As well as the beauty of the Nova Scotia landscape, I also feel the need to express the power of the southern sun in scenes from Tuscany, Spain, Italy and France, places where we like to take vacations.

Especially in the last year or so, I feel more and more the need to express the non-visible, so I'm creating abstract and impressionist paintings.  Yet they are all harmonized and well proportioned.  There is no provocation wanted.  The paintings are thought to create soothing stimulation in our stressful surroundings.  Looking for harmony is one of the present goals in my life as well as in my paintings.

For every painting, my interest is also to honour my teacher Dieter Ludas-Larsen; I'm so sorry he had to leave us so early.  Dieter passed away in 2004 yet I so often think I hear his voice and advice beside or behind me...

"Don't sign a painting if there is still something you could complete or improve!"

Themes, Styles & Techniques:

My artistic endeavours and experience over the past 30 years enable me to work in different styles and techniques as a tool for expression.

To show for example, a pleasant park scene, I would use the impressionistic style to bring the sunlight, warmth, and relaxed atmosphere to life.  On the other hand, if I am painting about the purpose of a lighthouse and what its signals mean for struggling fishermen, I prefer expressionistic tools.

To show non-visible phenomenon I prefer the abstract style.  I work with different styles to meet my intentions for each individual painting.

sunday morning in the park - impressionism butterfly - expressionism
blue mist - abstractionism spring conversation - naturalism

"fool the eye" collage on studio wall, using found objects such

as interior painting on wood easel, paint brush, pack of smokes, etc.
